Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated all over the world, and it was no exception in Kuwait. Homes of people celebrating Diwali were lit to celebrate the festive spirit. These photographs were shot on October 29, 2008 in the area where I am presently residing.

“I am distinctly aware of my identity though I still claim to be a citizen of the world. Over the years, I kept thinking a daisy is a daisy no matter which part of the world’s soil it has sprung up from. Now I think that each daisy blossoms from a plant that has its own spot where its roots are embedded. It draws its strength from that spot. I have a sense of continuing to be rooted to my land.”
- an excerpt from my post on Diwali in Kuwait.

The Kuwait Towers is a distinct architectural expression and a cultural icon of Kuwait. The three towers are made of reinforced concrete and located in the Kuwait City.
The main tower of 187 metres height serves as a restaurant and water tower. It has a viewing sphere which rises to 123 meters above sea leval and completes a full round every 30 minutes. The second, and middle tower, stores up to one million gallons of water. The third tower houses equipment to control the flow of electricity and illuminates the two bigger towers
The Kuwait Towers opened to the public in March 1979.
I captured these images on my way back from office last evening.

My nephew, holding prayer beads called Misbaha in his hand, is garbed in the traditional attire, Dishdasha in traditional surroundings decorated by Sadu craft work. Dishdasha is a loose, long-sleeved, ankle-length robe. Summer robes are generally white and made of cotton and winter Dishdashas can be darker and made of wool.
In 1979, in the wake of the changes brought about by modernization of Kuwait, Kuwait’s Al-Sadu Society was formed. This Society was created at Sadu House to protect and preserve Bedouin culture, particularly Bedouin crafts, from extinction. The Sadu or ‘Bedu’ weaving is the speciality of the Bedouin women who made the tent in which they lived, and its furnishings, rugs and cushions.

Earlier this month, I went on an excursion to Hatta, 115 kms away from Dubai city. Hatta is a small town in the northern part of Dubai near the borders with Oman. From Hatta, I drove over to the border towns of the Sultanate of Oman.
The above picture was made on the way from Hatta to the Omani borders.
